If you’ve ever had a bad day, you’ve probably wished you could just turn it off with the flip of a switch.

While that technology isn’t available just yet, according to some experts, there is an alternative that can still impact your mood.

Colored lighting may not be a staple in your home, but after one look at the benefits, you might want to reconsider. From helping you unwind to leaving you with an energized feeling, different hues are shown to have a positive impact on your overall well-being.

Before you start switching out every bulb in sight, it’s important to understand just how colored tones work in your space.

According to Bill Plageman, vice president of marketing and product development of lighting manufacturer Amerlux, application is key.

“Color temperature and intensity accentuate mood. It can relax or energize — promoting wakefulness during the day and sleep at night,” he notes. “This concept taps into the fundamental principle that blue light stimulates, and red and amber [shades] relax.”

When it comes to renewing your energy, warmer tones really start to shine. According to Plageman, yellow evokes feelings of happiness and joy, as well as sparks muscle energy and mental activity. Meanwhile, an orange range emits a friendly atmosphere and boosts oxygen to the brain for increased mental activity.
